Events

Friday, Sept 30, 2022 4:00pm thru 7:00pm PST

Peaceful & Informative Gathering
Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe

Outdoors at Sierra Pines United Methodist Church
22559 West Hacienda Drive, Grass Valley CA

A time of education, reflection, healing, and sharing about the Indian Boarding School History in the United States and graves of many Native Children. Please join us and bring your whole family.

Shelly Covert, Spokesperson for the Nisenan Tribe, will sing in her Native language and answer questions about U.S. Indian Boarding Schools and slavery of Native American children. Her older relatives and many others in her tribe were forced to attend residential government schools at a young age, where they were mistreated and stripped of their identity.  Her great-uncle was sent all the way to Kansas where he died at Haskell Boarding School, without a reason and his remains were never returned.

Photography with Assistive Technology - SSU - CEI - Saturday, March 13, 2021

Events

Saturday, March 13, 2021 4:00pm to 5:00pm PST

The profound connection to the environment and wildlife enjoyed by many nature photographers is not accessible to us all equally. Whether you or your child or student uses a wheelchair, has limited use of their hands, or is weak and has tremors, this informative and interactive event is for you.

We will explore artistic techniques using Assistive Technology (AT) for smart phones and digital cameras in order to promote accessible photography for everyone. You are encouraged to reach out to event leaders in advance for specific information about your disability or mobility needs, and how to acquire AT.

Before the event, we’ll ask you to take a photograph to upload. After a presentation and demonstration of homemade and purchased AT photography devices, each person will have a chance to share their photo with the group and get feedback from Rick, then hear about accessible nature photography sites.

At Sonoma State University – Center for Environmental Inquiry and Heartwork Photography we are deeply involved in both Nature and Wildlife Conservation and we work with many Environmental and Wildlife groups to increase awareness. Intermediate Backyard Photography with SSU - CEI - Monday, September, 28, 2020

Events

Monday, September, 28, 2020, 10:00am to 11:30am PST

Let photography bring you closer to nature and inspire others!

Turn-of-the-century photographs of western landscapes led to conservation action across the United States, while recent images of endangered bees and of polar bears living on dwindling resources inspire people to address environmental challenges. At Heartwork Photography and CEI, we are both deeply involved in both Nature and Wildlife Conservation and wework with many Environmental and Wildlife groups to increase awareness. Learn more about the Sonoma State University Center for Environmental Inquiry – http://cei.sonoma.edu/

Following spring’s popular beginner program, this class will go into more detail on how you can engage with the variety of photography opportunities right in your backyard using your cellphone or digital camera. Come develop an eye for close-up and creative shots, turning even ordinary natural items into photos to enjoy.

Logistics

Some photography experience is required, whether that be with a camera or smartphone. This event has no age limit, but is recommended for teens and adults at and advanced-beginner to intermediate level.

Please have your camera ready. During the event, we will take time to go out into our own “local nature” areas such as your back or front yard, just down the street, or on your porch to take nature photographs, so please have a location in mind.
